CPeX @ Pukemarock 2008 !!!

YES !! Thank you, Lord !
The legendary and totally ass-kicking Clement Peerens Explosition is performing at the Pukemarock festival in Puurs in September. I am so stoked about them getting together again and touring Belgium !

Several years ago, they ruled the rock scene in Flanders with their combination of no-nonsense, hard rock and humour on stage. The music most reminds me of the equally great AC/DC, but combined with a hilarious sense of humour (the front man, Clement Peerens, is actually Hugo Matthysen, and together with the former drummer, “Vettige” Swa De Bock, or Bart Peeters, they have their own crazy radio show “Het Leugenpaleis”, and a TV version “Het Peulengaleis”).

I remember when I was younger and totally loving their performances with CPeX. I simply thought it was genious! You get to rock out ànd crack yourself up with their jokes. Brilliant.

Are you ready veur den Dikke Lu ?

Read about them on Wikipedia (NL) here.
Their official site is of course www.cpex.be.

Daft Punk – Alive 2007 clip

It’s been awfully quiet on my blog, but that’s because I’m extremely busy at work until the end of the year at least. Probably my Flickr photos site is my busiest publication at the moment (not that it’s busy ;)).

Anyhoo, I just had to share this track of the legendary Daft Punk. It’s a mash-up of “Around The World” and “Harder Better Faster Stronger” which they played at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy, an 18,000-capacity sports arena in Paris, on June 14th, 2007. They asked the public to bring their digital camera, and tape the concert. The result of the recording is now available as Alive 2007 on double compact disc + dvd.

Here is a YouTube clip with the mash-up. Makes me wanna be there !

Review of Jurassic 5 concert

I went to see the J5 MC’s @ Ancienne Belgique, Brussels, Belgium last Sunday. It was everything I expected it to be: straight, honest hip hop without the posing, blingbling and bitches. The way hip hop is meant to be: making statements and having fun on good music. The really rocked the place, and everyone in the hall was rocking with them. They even interrupted their show, to force one drunk irritating guy out of the building: beautiful ! Most bands wouldn’t even give a damn.

Man, they really have something going on on stage. With the five of them rapping, and Nu Mark spinning the decks, it is really exciting to watch them perform. Not to say it is really hard to stand still to their flow & beats 🙂

Too bad they don’t perform in Belgium very often…

Jurassic 5 performing in Brussels

Today I am a happy man.

When ordering tickets for the concerts of Sergent Garcia (at the AB) and Maceo Parker (at the Blue Note Records Festival – All That Jazz? in Ghent), my eye fell on a simple entry in the list stating that no other than the J5 MC’s were coming to the Ancienne Belgique. Fantastic, of course, especially ’cause I was just recently going on about how they seldom come to Europe, let alone Belgium.

So now they’re finally coming 🙂 Needless to say, I ordered my tickets instantaneously (and at €20, that’s hella-cheap ! The concert of The Roots is €10 more expensive!). Thanks to their new album, no doubt, they will pass through Europe. It’s called Feedback, and together with this newness they also upgraded their web site a bit, which was kindof needed as well 😉 Production of the album is no longer in the capable hands of Cut Chemist – as he is aiming to go solo – but producer/DJ Nu-Mark will take this one on his account. I’m pretty confident it won’t suck. 🙂

Anyway, got some work to do. Enjoy good music !

New Album Sergent Garcia: “Mascaras”

This summer (the 14th of August to be more precise) Sergent Garcia will release a new album called Mascaras. I read somewhere that it will be a tribute to the masked Mexican wrestlers or something like that 🙂
In any case, I’m expecting this album to swing as much as the previous ones. This is probably the best kind of summer music !

They will be performing in the Ancienne Belgique [ abconcerts.be ] the 7th of December. You will find me then and there 😉

Big Bud – Fear Of Flying

Big Bud - Fear Of FlyingKick me in the nuts! I can’t believe how it is possible I forgot all about this great music maker.
I have his excellent Late Night Blues album, which is several years old now, and I never thought about checking up on his new releases. Shame on me.

And guess what: he released a new album! \o/ It’s called Fear Of Flying, released on Sound Trax records, Big Bud’s own label. This is obviously coming on my wishlist, together with his first album, Infinity + Infinity.

Wonderful music (for those of you not hearing any bells: quality drum ‘n’ bass with a high chill-factor).

Review of Ursula Rucker Concert

Last weekend, the magnificent Ursula Rucker performed in the Petrol club, in Antwerp, Belgium. This is my review of that night.

I first had a family celebration earlier on, so I was a bit stressed that night. I wanted to go to the family feast, but I didn’t want to miss one minute of Ursula’s concert. I already bought tickets, so there’s another reason to make sure we arrived on time.

I knew Petrol would open their doors at 9pm, and that the concert would officially begin at 10pm. I also read on the site that Rucker was scheduled to play at 22h30. The family gathering started at 7pm, but it was with a complete dinner (apero, main course , dessert, etc..), so I feared to not arrive in Antwerp on time. We left the family thing at a bit past 10 o’clock. Our friends were going to drive to Petrol on their own, and at their own time (so they wouldn’t have to wait for my girlfriend and me).

So we managed to leave in time (it’s a ~30min. drive to Petrol), and I made sure I didn’t relax in my driving 🙂 We arrived at -i think- 22h40 in front of the club’s doors, which wasn’t too bad, so we were content about our timing. We entered Petrol, and the rest of my posse was just paying to get in *rolleyes*. No stress there 😉

Anyway, no band was playing at that time, just the DJ that provided the intro to Ursula (he played blaxploitation and spoken word records). So it’s all good, but in the meantime, the clock’s hand got to about 23h15, and still no Philly chick spotted. Kind of a shame for all my hassle to get to Petrol before eleven 🙂 There wasn’t too many people in the club, which is good, coz I don’t like that when I’m at a concert. The mood was really relaxed, a good audience, you know.

I saw her entering the club through the same door everybody else gets in. I think it must have been around 23h30. I recognized her immediately, because she was wearing white boots (kind of stands out in the dark lighting), and she wore her hair in two big dots behind her ears in her typical style. She walked by us, and I would’ve expected her to be a bit taller. Now, I’m a big guy (1m96, which is ~6’4″ I think), but still… 🙂

The concert: wow, man. Just wow.

I know Ursula Rucker and her music. But seeing her perform in the flesh is something else. There she stood, mother of four, far in her thirties (how old is she exactly? don’t know), fighting against all that is wrong and injust. Awesome.

She really gets into her music/poetry, and gives herself 100%. She sounds as though she means it, and you can really feel what she’s feeling when she speaks her words. She has a very strong, yet very soft voice. That adds to the power of her. Some people said the Spice Girls were girl power…. lol 😀 They should hear this woman go at it.

There was only a drummer and a guitarist behind her. The rest was on tape, unfortunately (you could clearly hear the synths etc…). Another less fortunate thing is that a speaker was totally blown, so each time there was a high VU, you could hear the ripped bass. But it was okay, it didn’t really mess up the sound a lot.

She mainly played the tracks of Ma’at Mama, I guess to test the reactions of the public. They sounded really well, especially with the acoustic guitar. Of course, the recorded sounds helped, but it was mainly just her voice, the drums and the guitar playing. It had nothing to do with playbacking, just enriching the sound of a song.

Aside from the new tracks, she also brought Supa Sista (of course), and Untitled Flow. Maybe just one or two other ‘older’ tracks.

I’m really satisfied, now I saw her perform live. It really helps me to respect her even more, and she definately ‘converted’ a few disbelievers that evening, and gained lots of new fans.

I wish for her to be able to keep making such good music, with such strong, honest lyrics, because I love what she does. Respect to you, Ma’at Mama, and to all other ma’at mamas out there.

Thank you.

Edit: As Tim explains in the comments, he used a guitar synth to play the additional sounds, not a tape. Don’t I feel silly now 😉
